THE LADY spikers of the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) took the fourth and final ticket to the semifinal round after edging out the University of Cebu (UC) in straight sets in the 2013 Cesafi women’s volleyball tournament last Thursday night at the USP-F gym in Lahug.
With the specter of missing the all-important semifinals looming, USP-F put on an impressive showing to oust the resilient UC, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.
The win was just USP-F’s second in five games but it was enough to put the Lady Panthers in the next round alongside the unbeaten Southwestern University (SWU), the upstart Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R).
Bowing out of the competition were UC and the defending champions University of San Carlos (USC), with identical 1-4 (win-loss) records.
In the girls’ competition, SWU kept its hopes for a semifinal berth alive with a 25-13, 26-28, 25-12 win over the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC).
The win was SWU’s third against a lone loss while SHS-AdC closed its elimination round stint with a 2-3 card. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
