MIAMI—Forecasters say a tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of Canada north of the U.S. border as Hurricane Irene moves north.

The National Hurricane Center said Saturday that the storm warning extended from the U.S. border to Fort Lawrence. The warning also included the south coast of Nova Scotia from Fort Lawrence to Porters Lake.

Irene was maintaining its strength as it moved across North Carolina toward Norfolk, Va. Its maximum sustained winds were holding steady at about 85 mph.

The hurricane was about 95 miles (153 kilometers) south of Norfolk, but it was already bringing heavy rain and wind gusts to southeastern Virginia.
