PNP launches rescue operations for abducted Zambo police chief
MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police said Tuesday rescue operations were underway for the police chief of Zamboanga City who was abducted by members of the Moro National Liberation Front when he tried to negotiate for the release of civilians being held by the rebels.
Police Senior Superintendent Theodore Sindac, PNP-Public Information Office chief, said Police Senior Superintendent Jose Chiquito Malayo was abducted in Barangay (village) Mampang around 11 a.m. when he went there to make arrangements with the MNLF Misuari Faction forces for the safe release of civilian hostages.
“Malayo was communicating with the MNLF Misuari Group when he was restrained and held hostage just within the vicinity of operating elements,” Sindac said, quoting reports reaching Camp Crame.
He added that Malayo has been moved to another location.
Hours later, INQUIRER.net reported that MNLF spokesperson Emmanuel Fontanilla confirmed that they have in custody of Malayo, as well as two of his security escorts.

Article continues after this advertisementMalayo’s abduction came after the release of at least 85 hostages early Tuesday.
“While we rejoice the rescue of 149 hostages, we are deeply saddened that Col. Chiquito Malayo is in the custody of the MNLF.,” Zamboanga City Government quoted Mayor Isabelle Climaco in a Twitter post as saying.
She called on the public to pray for the safety and protection of Malayo.
“The operations of the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines are ongoing, and the police continue to do their jobs in keeping our territories secured,” Climaco said.
Meanwhile, curfew hours will once again be implemented, the Mayor added.
