Mayor Herbert Bautista

Three Quezon City councilors are asking peers to allow Mayor Herbert Bautista to enter into a P27.1-million deal with a private firm for the purchase of light-emitting diode (LED) lamps to upgrade the street lighting system in 11 barangays (villages).

Council Majority Floor Leader Jesus Suntay as well as councilors Godofredo Liban II and Eufemio Lagumbay of the 5th and 3rd districts, respectively, have filed a resolution authorizing the mayor to enter into a contract that would convert the existing streetlight system from that relying on high pressure sodium (HPS) to one using LED lamps.

The HPS system uses gas-discharge lamps that rely on sodium to produce light, from a dark pink glow to an intense pinkish orange, and also contains other elements like mercury and xenon. LED lamps, which have a longer life compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps, are brighter and generally considered more environment-friendly.

The councilors said the Office of the Mayor had requested authorization from the council to enter into a deal for the purchase of 949 sets of LED light fixtures at P25,623,000 and a control panel system worth P1.5 million. The LED lamps will be set up in Barangays South Triangle, including Panay Avenue; Obrero; Sacred Heart; Kamuning; Roxas; Paligsahan; and Laging Handa, all in the city’s 4th district where Suntay is a councilor. They will also be installed in Barangays Bungad, Nayong Kanluran, Sta. Cruz, and West Triangle, all in the 1st district.—Jeannette I. Andrade
