USJ-R belles trounce foes
THE UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) reigned supreme Tuesday evening as its girls’ and women’s squads emerged victorious over their respective rivals in the 2013 Cesafi volleyball tournament at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.
The Lady Baby Jaguars upended the upstart Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) in straight sets, 25-14, 25-23, for their first win of the season.
SHS-AdC, though much improved, continued on its rollercoaster ride through this season as the loss dropped it to 2-2 (win-loss).
The Lady Jaguars, on the other hand, had to scramble back from an opening set defeat before trouncing the defending champions USC Lady Warriors in four sets, 24-26, 29-27, 25-14, 25-13.
The wards of legendary head coach Grace Antigua now tote an even 2-2 record while USC’s title defense is clearly going nowhere after suffering its third loss in as many games.
Incidentally, both of USJ-R’s female squads were coming off tough losses. USJ-R’s girl’s team, the defending champions in the juniors division, was upset by USC on opening day. Their older counterparts were also beaten soundly by the Cebu Doctor’s University last week. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
