The Caloocan government has urged businessmen in the city to install security cameras and surveillance systems to deter crime.
In a statement, Mayor Oscar Malapitan said the city government would now implement a 2009 ordinance compelling financial institutions in Caloocan to install security cameras.
Financial institutions include banks, pawnshops and money changers, among others.
Under the 2009 ordinance, Malapitan said the city’s Business Permit and Licensing Office would suspend the business permits of establishments which fail to comply with the ordinance while new financial institutions would not be given business permits.
The ordinance, however, does not cover business establishments which are not financial institutions.
“This ordinance does not extend to other businesses located in the city so we will be coming up with other measures to encourage the rest to install security cameras,” Malapitan said.
He added that the city council was considering amending the ordinance so that it would apply to all types of businesses in Caloocan.
Malapitan said that security cameras, aside from being deterrents to crime and vandalism, could also be used in recording incidents which may be used by law enforcers to solve cases.
