Number coding, traffic rerouting set for ‘Edsa Tayo’ rally

MANILA, Philippines—The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday reminded motorists that the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program, or number coding scheme, will remain in effect in Quezon City Wednesday during the Edsa Tayo rally at the Edsa Shrine.
“We will not suspend it so as not to worsen the traffic congestion that is expected to be the result of the rally,” MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said, as he appealed to the organizers of the even to strictly observe order and discipline during the rally.
He said protesters should ensure that roads will remain passable for ambulances going to Cardinal Santos Hospital, Medical City, and other Quezon City hospitals.
MMDA also released through Twitter its traffic management plan for Wednesday which will be implemented from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Tolentino said the zipper lane or reversible lane will cover 2.86 kilometers of roads on portions of Edsa and Otigas Avenue and be opened only for private vehicles
To help ease heavy traffic along the affected areas, MMDA will allow the counter-flow of vehicles from11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
For private vehicles, MMDA said they can take the following alternate routes:
1. Zipper lane (contra flow) occupying one (1) Inner lane of Southbound from Mega Mall to Edsa–Crame (left turn from Edsa to Rosario use Shaw Blvd.)
2. Zipper lane (contra flow) from Ortigas-Meralco to Edsa-Cubao take the left turning fly-over and merge at the zipper lane of Edsa from Mega Mall to Santolan. (Private Vehicles)

> From Makati to Cubao/Monumento, right turn at McKinley Road, left C-5, straight to Libis, then take Boni Serrano Ave, right Edsa to destination.

Tolentino earlier said at least 500 MMDA traffic and medical personnel will be deployed in the area to help man the traffic and assist rallyists who would need medical attention.
He also said at least 37 military trucks will be deployed in the area for the agency’s free ride service in case commuters will be stranded because of the anti-pork barrel rally.
