Defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) got off to a sizzling start in its title retention bid when it routed Don Bosco College (DBC), 6-0, in yesterday’s opener of the tertiary division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football competition at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Kenneth Enriquez started the scoring spree for the kicking Jaguars in the 36th minute followed by back-to-back goals of Rikko De Guzman in the 38th and 41st minutes.

Junifer Ebero sealed the first half at 4-0 for USJ-R.

In the second half, USJ-R got goals from Carlos Evara (65th minute) and Sean Brose (86th minute) to complete its rout of DBC which is playing in this tournament for the first time.

In the second game, last year’s first runner-up University of San Carlos (USC) also posted its first win this season with a 1-0 edging of the University of Cebu (UC).

Karl Arcenas scored from a direct kick in the 14th minute for USC which failed to field in Christian Delan whom organizers deemed not qualified to play.

Tournament director Francis Ramirez said that Cesafi commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy may have agreed to let Delan play despite his being a member of the Cebu Queen City United which played in the United Football League (UFL). Tournament rules, however, state that a semi-professional player is not qualified to play in the tournament.

That is not the only rule that disallows Delan from suiting up for USC.

As a placement test passer, Delan has to have a two-year residency before he can play in the tournament. He just passed the placement test this year.

In yesterday’s last collegiate game, the University of the Visayas (UV) nipped the University of Southern Philippines- Foundation (USP-F), 1-0, on the 17th-minute goal by Pedro Agustin Diao.

SECONDARY DIVISION

In the secondary division, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) strengthened its hold of the top spot as it stretched its run to three via a 7-0 thrashing of USJ-R.

Neil Bonghanoy opened the scoring for the Greywolves with a goal in the 5th minute. Vincent Erik “Ngitz” Lovitos and Reevo Jumawan added two goals each while the rest were scored by Christian Kerr Agot and Moiselle Angelo Alforque.

Defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) also stayed on the path of retaining its title by surging past USP-F, 2-0 on goals by Miguel Kwan and Mark Villordon.

USP-F’s Christian Millebo picked up a red card for earning two yellows.
