Workers to get double pay on holidays – DoLE

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Labor and Employment on Friday reminded all private sector employers across the country to pay their workers double on the upcoming holidays next week.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said President Benigno Aquino III declared August 29 (National Heroes’ Day) and August 30 (Eid’l Fitr) as regular holidays nationwide by virtue of Proclamation No. 84 and Proclamation No. 234, respectively.

Since the purpose of celebrating National Heroes’ Day on Monday was to accord “fullest honors to the greatness of our heroes… and the resiliency of ordinary Filipinos, toiling workers on such day must be paid proper and correct wages,” said Baldoz Friday in a statement.

An employee who reports for work on Monday, a regular workday, is entitled to receive 200 percent of his or her basic wage for the first eight hours, said the labor chief.

Employees working beyond eight hours are, meanwhile, warranted to receive an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate, she added.
