TAGUM CITY, Philippines — A soldier was killed after being shot by unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen here on Wednesday, police said.
Senior Superintendent Samuel Gadingan, Davao del Norte police chief, identified the victim as Staff Sergeant Jose Hernan, of the Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion based in Asuncion town, Davao del Norte.
Gadingan said the victim was killed as he was driving a motorcycle from the 60th IB headquarters in Doña Andrea, Asuncion, heading to the city proper around 10:30 a.m.
Upon reaching Purok (community) Alvareda, Pagsabangan village, another motorcycle with two men onboard drove alongside, and one of the men fired at Hernan using a handgun of an undetermined caliber. Hernan was shot in the head and other parts of the body, Gadingan said.
The victim was killed instantly while the gunmen fled in an unknown direction.
Gadingan said the Tagum police have started an investigation to determine the killers.
