DESPITE a lower attendance, this year’s Walk for a Cause in Cebu City generated more than P26,000 to fund educational projects to out-of-school youths.

“It was successful. There was a good turnout with around 50,000-60,000 attendees,” said Steve Norman Tan, executive director of the Alay Lakad Cebu Foundation Inc. (ALFI).

Last year, there were 60,000 to 70,000 attendees, Tan said.

“Some contingents were unable to come because of other commitments. But we are happy because there were some new schools and contingents that joined this year,” he said.

The walk started at 6 a.m. at the corner of M.J. Cuenco Avenue going to Imus Road and P. Del Rosario Street. It ended at the North Parking area of SM City Cebu.

Traffic was smooth, according to the Cebu City Integrated Traffic Operations Management (Citom).

Cebu City Mayor Michael who also attended the event described it as “heartwarming, exhilarating and successful.”

Since ALFI became independent in 2009, the group is establishing more contacts and partners in order to sustain their educational programs, Tan said.

In June this year, ALFI opened another program to provide educational assistance for elementary students.

“We really need more funds so that we can help more people. We also want to sustain our programs for the youths,” Tan said.

Tan said Mayor Rama promised to include a P1 million assistance to ALFI in its annual budget allocation.

The ALFI office is located in P. Abella St. in Labangon, Cebu City.
