MANILA, Philippines – Detained in a cell surrounded by two layers of fence that have been shielded with large sheets of blue fabric, Janet Lim-Napoles has only a clear view of the sky to relieve her from ennui and claustrophobia, or fear of enclosed spaces.
When asked Monday how they intend to handle her claustrophobia, Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, told reporters “walang kurtina so makikita niya yung langit, hindi naman parang naka kulob siya (there are no curtains so she has a clear view of the sky, it’s not like she is being closed-in).”
Early Monday, Napoles’ blood pressure went up to 180/150 allegedly due to anxiety attack from her disorder around 3 a.m., according to Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman.
She was transferred to Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna early Sunday from Makati City Jail on orders of the Makati Regional Trial Court.
Fort Sto. Domingo is the headquarters and training camp of the PNP Special Action Force (SAF). It was here former president Joseph Ejercito Estrada, Muslim rebel leader Nur Misuari, and then coup plotter Gregorio Honasan had been detained.
Napoles has only a monobloc chair and table in the living room and an electric fan in the bedroom.
According to SAF Director General Carmelo Valmoria, they have removed items that may be used to inflict harm such as curtain rods and ropes.
Outrage followed after Roxas had revealed that Napoles was detained in an air conditioned room in the Makati City Jail. He said that the jail only has two cells for the more than a hundred women detainees. He added that moving all inmates to one cell just to make room for Napoles was impossible.
