THE LA SALLE Green Archers swept blood rivals Ateneo in their season series, all thanks to sophomore sensation Jeron Teng, who canned the game-winning jumper with 1.9 seconds left that lifted his squad to a sensational 66-64 win in the 76th UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Though he finished with just eight points, Teng made sure he scored the most important ones.
Isolated against Chris Newsome with 14 seconds left on the clock, Teng drove hard, rose up and swished the crucial jumper to give the Archers the victory.
The sweep marks the first time that La Salle has done it since 2001.
Almond Vosotros led the Archers with 19 points and six boards while Jason Perkins added 13 markers and 15 rebounds to help La Salle improve to 7-4 (win-loss), half a game behind the second place Far Eastern University Tamaraws, who earlier in the day, lost to the University of Santo Tomas, 78-79, in double overtime.
Ateneo, which dropped to 6-5, was led by the 14 of Juami Tiongson and the 13 of Nico Elorde. The Eagles are now tied for fourth place with the Tigers. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
