Lady Cobras get back at Lady Warriors
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Spiking Jaguars and the Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras once again showed their eagerness to get back to their former perches atop the throne as they kept their unbeaten streaks going with impressive wins in their respective divisions in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) volleyball tournament.
The Lady Cobras, champions for three seasons before getting foiled by the University of San Carlos (USC) last year, got back at their tormentors yesterday as they downed the Lady Warriors in straight sets, 25-8, 25-21, 26-24, at the Aznar Coliseum.
The Spiking Jaguars of local legend Grace Antigua, on the other hand, followed up their monumental win over the reigning champions USC last Monday with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) late Friday night.
With the bitter memory of their title loss to USC still fresh in their minds, the ladies of head coach Jordan Paca used this as sheer motivation and pummeled their opponents with spike attacks from all angles served up by Marlyn Llagoso, Jerra Pacinio and Charylou Wave Paden. That set the tone early and paved the way for the straight sets win, their second in as many games.
For USJ-R, its two Kevins-Kevin Lawas and Kevin Labay – lit up CIT-U’s defense with a variety of thunderous spikes and crafty dropshots and anchored a defense that never let the Wildcats get into the game to fashion out their second straight win.
In the other men’s division game, the University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USP-F) beat SWU, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18.
