The Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras continued on their climb back to the title after they grabbed their second win in a row with a four-set win over rivals University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Lady Jaguars in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. women’s volleyball tournament Thursday night at the Aznar Coliseum.
The victory was SWU’s second in a row but it didn’t come easily against the wards of USJ-R’s legendary head coach Grace Antigua.
But the Lady Cobras’ depth and talent eventually overcame the jitters to win, 23-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-20.
The Lady Cobras were made to pay dearly for playing out of focus early in the game as the Lady Jaguars pounced on the former’s numerous service errors to eke out the close win.
It didn’t take long, though, for SWU to gain its bearings behind the stellar efforts of their veteran spikers Marlyn Llagoso, Cherrylou Wave Paden and Jerra Pacinio to help the Cobras take the next two sets.
The fourth set saw SWU’s second stringers take care of business as Hansel Bantiles, Jessa Jorquia, Dyan Darantinao and Sheen Quino fired in the points to close out the set and the match.
In the girls’ division, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu debuted in style as it upended the University of Cebu, 14-25, 26-24, 25-19.
