UV guns for q’final twice-to-beat edge

Games today (Cebu Coliseum)

5 p.m. – USPF vs. CEC (Juniors)

6:45 p.m. – CIT-U vs. UV (Seniors)

The University of the Visayas hope to end their elimination round campaign with a bang when they battle the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats today in the 13th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament, at the Cebu Coliseum.

The former nine-time champions are currently at 4-1 (win-loss) and a win today will secure them the second seed and a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal round.

The Lancers are coming off an awesome 106-53 beatdown of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers last week.

After getting off to a sluggish start, ace point guard John Abad has regained his rhythm and is showing steady flashes of brilliance reminiscent of his MVP-winning campaign in the preseason Partner’s Cup.

Not only that, UV’s frontcourt has seen consistent performances from reigning league MVP Wowie Escosio and African import, Mike Harry.

The Wildcats on the other hand, hope to improve their 1-3 record for a more favorable match-up in the Last 8.

Meanwhile, in juniors play, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons gun for second place in the standings when they battle the USPF Baby Panthers. The Dragons (4-2) are half a game behind the UV Baby Lancers (5-2) for second place behind the unbeaten Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (7-0).
