Govt’s greening program gets backing

Mactan Ecozone workers plant coffee trees to lessen the impact of climate change in support of the government’s National Greening Program, the NKC Manufacturing Philippines Corp. once again conducted an annual tree planting activity in Adlaon, a mountain barangay in Cebu City.

Last Aug. 10, more than 20 NKC management personnel led by company president Junichi Ishida trooped to Adlaon to plant 5,000 coffee tree seedlings which they got from Nestle Philippines coffee farm in Davao.

Coffee trees are recommended in the national greening program as these absorb carbon dioxide emissions, thus lessening the effects of climate change.

As a landslide prone barangay, the coffee trees will also help mitigate soil erosion in Adlaon as well as supplement the livelihood of farmers.

The coffee trees planted will bear fruits within 18 months and all the coffee seeds harvested by the farmer beneficiaries from Adlaon will be bought by Nestle Philippines for its coffee production.

The tree planting activity by NKC, a multinational company in Mactan Economic Zone 2, was jointly held with Pollution Control Association of the Philippines Inc. in Central Visayas (Pcapi-7), Cebu City Council on Environment chaired by councilor Nida Cabrera, Nestle Philippines and barangay captain Elvis Narra.

As a non-stock, non-profit, non-government environmental organization, Pcapi-7 is providing help to companies in planting trees, which is required in their Environmental Compliance Certificate.

For more information, PCAPI-7 can be contacted at 2333604.
