You can’t shit in our backyard.
This was the stern warning issued by Cebu-based fighters who will battle Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) warriors from Mindanao in the “Ground and Pound VII Championships: Resolution” on Aug. 31 at the Cebu Coliseum.
Undefeated Cris Marvyn “Lindol” Thompson Brooks, an English fighter, promised MMA fans to an action-packed duel when he meets Davao’s John Lloyd “Destroyer” Abucayan of Beefit Pythons Pit for the vacant GPC Heavyweight title.
Brooks who trained at the YawYan Ardigma Cebu for four years now, also called Abucayan’s claim that he has the best MMA team, a big lie.
“It’s a big lie because I’ve fought and defeated his teammate in Cagayan de Oro. For me, the best team is YawYan ArDigma and let me tell him that what he saw in Cagayan de Oro will be far different from what he’ll see on August 31 because I’m more conditioned and prepared this time,” said Brooks during yesterday’s SCOOP Forum of Bobby “Knight” Inoferio at Baseline Recreation Center.
MMA Promoter and YawYan ArDigma chief Master Benigno “Ekin” Caniga Jr., also predicted that 90 percent of the card’s 12 bouts will end by knockout or submission.
“I’m very excited because these are the best fighters from Visayas and Mindanao and some are from Manila. I’m sure that majority of the fights will not go the distance,” Caniga said.
CONFIDENT
Brooks teammates, YawYan Fighting Championships (YFC) champion Renan “Flash” Noblefranca, former Universal Reality Combat Championships (URCC) title contender Geronimo “Daredevil” Etac and Jordan “Labuyo” Balcita all expressed readiness to go to war.
“Kahit first time kung lumaban ng MMA, alam kong handang-handa na ako dahil sa training na ginawa namin,” said Balcita who has an undefeated record of 39 wins with 27 knockouts in local kick boxing.
Title contenders James “Spider” Serenio of SOMA Fight Club and Robert Kru “Maldito” Serdone of Red Neos Gladiator were just as confident.
Serenio who will be fighting former URCC champion Victor Torre for the vacant GPC flyweight title said that he is 100 percent ready to fight the latter. Serdone on the other hand, sees a knockout win against GPC Light weight champion Lordy Rey Yamit of Butuan City.
“He talks a lot, I trained a lot, that’s the difference. Let’s see who will stand and who will fall between the two of us inside the ring,” Serdone said.
Caniga said that the Mindanao-based fighters to be headed by Yamit will arrive in Cebu early next week to attend pre-fight activities.
Tickets are priced at P200 for upperbox, P400 for lowerbox, P750 for ringside and P1,500 for VIP seats. For reservations and more information, call 255-8919, 255-1405 or call/txt 0932-4524999.
