Today, August 22, is the 32nd death anniversary of the late National Artist Vicente Manansala. Born on Jan. 22, 1910, he was known for his paintings of postwar Manila like the “Madonna of the Slums” which reflected poverty. A graduate of the University of the Philippines’ School of Fine Arts, he was also a well-known muralist. Some of his murals can be found at Philippine Heart Center for Asia, UP Arts and Science lobby and Cultural Center of the Philippines. He was named National Artist in Painting on Aug. 27, 1981, five days after his death. Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
