The defending champions Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras put on a strong performance in the fourth period to put away the resilient University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 81-68, in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Lulled into a slow-paced game by the Webmasters, the defending champions finally woke up from their slumber in the final canto behind the efforts of Monbert Arong, Mark Jayven Tallo and import Landry Sanjo to take full control of the game and capture their fourth win in a row.
Sanjo, an energetic power forward, broke out for 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and a block while Arong, a high-leaping lefty wingman, added 17 points and three steals.
Tallo, SWU’s prized court general, had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals.
UC kept close until the Cobras let go of a 13-4 run with Arong scoring on numerous transition layups and Sanjo nabbing offensive boards and putbacks.
A three-point play by Sanjo put SWU on top 64-52, with 3:27 left.
The Webmasters tried to rally and came to within nine but SWU retaliated with a straightaway three from Tallo, who scored eight in the last period, and another fastbreak bucket from Arong that put the game away, 71-58.
Noel Villanueva scored 16 for UC, which fell to its third straight defeat.
