Pateros placed under state of calamity

/ 05:53 PM August 20, 2013

MANILA, Philippines–The municipality of Pateros was placed under a state of calamity after all of its 10 barangays (villages) have been submerged in floods.

Pateros Mayor Joey Medina said the municipal council on Tuesday afternoon issued the resolution declaring a state of calamity and allowing the release of a portion of its calamity fund.

As of Tuesday, the floods forced some 3,000 people to leave their homes and take shelter at 13 evacuation centers in the only municipality in Metro Manila as floods in some low-lying areas reached chest-high.

Two major roads–C. Almeda and Martires Streets–were also impassable to vehicles.

Medina said the Pateros River was swollen and would overflow if the heavy rains persisted.
