Police looking at gas as cause of explosion in San Juan

MANILA, Philippines — A police official said on Saturday that there were “indications” that gas may have caused the explosion on a part of Wilson St. in San Juan City before dawn Saturday.

Chief Superintendent Miguel Laurel, the Eastern Police District director, told reporters on the scene that members of the Explosives and Ordnance unit that scoured the establishments damaged by the blast past 1 a.m. smelled something “masangsang [pungent].”

He said no crater was found in the area.

“We will know (what substance) that was once (the authorities) swab (the area),” he said.
