Labor official exposed on national TV

Dr. Gener T. Becina, a pedestrian and associate professor at the FEU-NRMH Institute of Medicine, bought a sports utility vehicle, 4×4 Chevrolet Trailblazer from Chevrolet Greenhills Edsa on June 5, 2013.

Becina complains that the car turned out to be a lemon.

Of thousands of cars that come out of a factory, there’s bound to be a lemon.

When the car was turned over to him, Becina said he heard “crackling sounds” at the back, prompting him to take it back to the dealer for repair work.

After three days, according to the doctor, the dealer gave the car back to him.

But the crackling sounds persisted and “even became louder,” said Becina in a letter to this columnist.

The unit had been repaired thrice by the dealer but the problem still remained, he said.

Becina said he had been pleading with the dealer to give him a replacement. But the dealer refused.

There ought to be a law against dealers of cars fresh from the factory who refuse to take back lemons they sell despite pleas from buyers.

The public should be protected from these types of car dealers.

Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista should relieve his Building Official chief, Isagani Versoza, for sleeping on the job.

This corner has brought to Versoza’s attention the danger posed by a five-story structure on Santolan Road which was built without using the expertise of an engineer.

The owner of the structure, who got a permit for a two-story building, added three more floors put up by carpenters and masons in the neighborhood.

The resulting structure is so weak that a moderately strong earthquake could topple it down like a house of cards.

Versoza didn’t give a hoot even after the column about the structure came out June 22, as he didn’t give a damn when I brought to his attention a complaint of Dr. Margie Holmes that part of her neighbor’s house had intruded into her property.

Is Versoza so close to the mayor he can’t be removed from the job even if he’s incompetent?

Assistant Labor Attaché Tony Villafuerte in Saudi Arabia must have felt like he was sitting on a chair with burning coals underneath while he listened to former domestic helpers accuse him of molesting them during a Senate hearing.

Of course he denied the accusation. But between him and three women saying the same thing, who would the viewer believe?

Even if he doesn’t get punished for his misdeed because of our lopsided judicial system, his “indecent” exposure on national TV was more than enough punishment.

Why doesn’t Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano just keep quiet on the Court of Appeals ruling transferring the jurisdiction of Bonifacio Global City to Makati City from Taguig City?

Cayetano’s brother-in-law, Congressman Lino, ruled Barangay Fort Bonifacio like a kingpin when he was its barangay chair.

Lino Cayetano didn’t listen to a taxi driver who complained he was beaten up and robbed inside his barangay hall early this year.

If the Cayetanos couldn’t handle this taxi driver’s problem, how can they be expected to run Bonifacio Global City?
