Trader killed in drinking spree

A 50-YEAR-OLD hog raiser was shot dead during a drinking session in barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City Wednesday night.

Demetrio Maribao suffered gunshot wounds in the neck and left arm.

Police are looking for Bobby Godinez and a still-unidentified man as possible suspects.

Police said Godinez and another man went to Maribao’s house on Wednesday night and invited the victim for a drinking session.

Jonas Malingin, brother-in-law of Maribao, said the drinking session took place near a piggery behind the victim’s house.

Malingin told police that he heard bursts of gunfire coming from the piggery.

When he checked where the gunshots came from, Malingin said he saw the victim slumped on the ground and Godinez and his companion about to flee.

Police conducted a follow-up operation but failed to locate the suspects.

Mercy, the victim’s wife, told police that her husband owed P300,000 to a certain June when he was still involved in the illegal drug trade.

The wife said her husband had paid the debt by giving June a land title.

During a background check, police found out that Godinez was out on bail for attempted murder with direct assault and robbery charges./CORRESPONDENT NORMAN V. MENDOZA
