Libyan military launches second Scud missile

/ 09:53 AM August 23, 2011

WASHINGTON— U.S. military officials say Libyan forces have once again fired a Scud missile, but it was unclear where it landed.

The short-range missile was launched from near Sirte, the hometown of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and one of the remaining cities still under regime control.

U.S. officials said the Scud was fired around 2:15 p.m. EDT (1815 GMT), but they did not know whether anyone was hurt. On Aug. 15, Libyan government forces fired a Scud missile for the first time during this year’s conflict. It was launched from near Sirte and landed in the desert outside Brega, injuring no one. Officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

Monday’s launch came as rebel forces took control of Tripoli, amid continuing questions about Gadhafi’s whereabouts.
