Fever cancels Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo surgery

/ 01:43 AM August 23, 2011

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo developed a fever Sunday night and her doctors decided to postpone a third surgery scheduled for Tuesday to repair a dislodged metal implant in her neck.

Her doctors hoped the fever would go away in the coming days so she could be cleared for the operation, said Marilen Lagniton, St. Luke’s Medical Center vice president for customer affairs.

Lagniton read a statement giving Arroyo’s condition in general terms. The now Pampanga representative has been confined in the hospital in Taguig City since Aug. 9.

“Various tests for the possibility of infection as the cause of the fever were done. All the tests turned out to be negative,” Lagniton said. “Hence, she will be continually monitored.”

According to Lagniton, Arroyo was able to do “regular things—talk, walk around, have regular meals, watch TV and she reads a lot.”
