Coast Guard sends team to check source of oil spill in Cavite

/ 09:25 AM August 09, 2013

MANILA, Philippines—A Philippine Coast Guard team was on its way to Cavite to get samples from the oil spill that has affected at least seven villages in the province to determine where the leak came from.

PCG spokesman, Lieutenant Commander Armand Balilio, said the team left the PCG headquarters in Manila around 8:15 a.m.

Balilio said the team will get samples of the oil that spilled over the waters of Rosario, Cavite and nearby villages Thursday to check if it would match to the oil being used by MT Makisig Herma Shipping Transport Corp. The result was expected to come out within the day.

“Based on the report I received from station commander, discoloration nalang daw ng langis ang natitira,” Balilio said, noting that the kind of oil that leaked in the area could evaporate.

No other information, he said, was available as the team has yet to get updates on the situation.
