500 more police officers deployed in metro to reduce street crimes

MANILA, Philippines—The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said Thursday it has deployed additional 500 police officers in a bid to reduce street crimes in Metro Manila.
Of the 500 officers downloaded from Philippine National Police’s Regional Public Safety Battalion, 150 were assigned to Quezon City Police District; 150 to Southern Police District; 75 to Northern Police District; 75 to Eastern Police District; and 50 to Manila Police District, Police Chief Superintendent Marcelo Garbo Jr. said.
He said the efficiency and competence of these police officers have been honed through the Public Safety Basic Recruit Course and Field Training Program.
Garbo ordered all district directors to look after their men, practice skepticism or “tamang duda” and ensure that all of them are working with dedication in their respective area of responsibility.
“I will be inspecting police stations and police outposts randomly to verify that all reports submitted to me are factual. All performing personnel will be given due credit but all erring and irresponsible will be sanctioned accordingly,” Garbo said.
For his part, Police Senior Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP-Public Information Office chief, said PNP’s national headquarters in Camp Crame has not raised the alert status, but noted that security in the US embassy, as well as in all other embassies, have been tightened.
He said Garbo has requested an augmentation from PNP’s Special Action Force for this purpose.
“[This] is a proactive measure and full enforcement of our three-tiered defense system,” Sindac said when asked for the particular reason why security was tightened in the Metro.
In the past few days, a number of explosions have been recorded in Philippines’ south which claimed the lives of several people.
Also, a suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf Group was recently arrested in Quezon City.
PNP chief, Director General Alan Purisima has earlier said, however, that he has not seen indications that the series of bombings in Mindanao could spill over to Metro Manila.
Sindac also said that as of Thursday, PNP’s Intelligence community has not gathered information on any threat that should worry the public.
“However, as I would emphasize again, continuous ang assessment ng mga information pang dumadating from time to time,” Sindac said.
