5 soldiers injured in NPA ambush in Agusan Sur

MANILA, Philippines – Five soldiers were wounded in an ambush by communist rebels in Agusan del Sur Thursday morning, the military said.

Lieutenant Colonel Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said the troops were on foot patrol and were on their way back to their command post when about 15 rebels “ambushed” in Purok 2, Kauswagan village in Loreto town at 7:15 a.m.

The rebels detonated landmines which injured the soldiers, all with a rank of Private First Class.

A 10-minute clash ensued before the rebels withdrew, Bongosia said.
