MANILA, Philippines—Police have launched a hunt for a man who allegedly stabbed to death his 35-year-old stepmother inside their home in Quezon City Tuesday afternoon while he was high on drugs.
Senior Police Officer 1 Cristituto Zaldarriaga of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said Mark June Cuevas, in his early 20s, fled after the attack on Arlene Serrano inside their house in Barangay Central at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Serrano, who suffered multiple stab wounds, was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors in nearby East Avenue Medical Center.
Zaldarriaga said that before the incident, Serrano was chatting with three friends in her home when Cuevas arrived.
As soon as the suspect saw his stepmother, he allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and attacked her, according to the case investigator.
Amid the assault, the shocked visitors escaped and hid at a neighbor’s house, fearing the suspect would turn his ire on them.
Pablo Cuevas, Serrano’s live-in-partner, who was sleeping in his room, was awakened by the commotion and found the badly wounded victim lying bloodied on the floor.
He rushed Serrano to EAMC but she succumbed to her injuries.
The case investigator said the motive in the killing remains unknown but noted that several of the witnesses alleged the suspect was a drug abuser.
