MEPZ provides more jobs to Cebuanos

THE Mactan Export Processing Zone continues to provide more jobs in Lapu-Lapu City.

These job opportunities caused more people from other provinces to come to Cebu, said Noel Rafols, National Statistics Office spokesman yesterday.

He said this was one reason the population of Cebu increased by 2.15 percent from 1992 to 2010.

Rafols said of the 4,167,300 people in Cebu, half of these are from the highly urbanized cities, which are Mandaue, Cebu and Lapu-Lapu cities.

He said the increase in subdivisions, boarding houses, and apartments in Lapu-Lapu City are signs that more people are working in the the city such as in the MEPZ.

Many of these boarding houses and apartments are being rented by Mactan export processing zone workers, said Rafols.

He however failed to give the figures reflecting the increase of boarding houses and apartments and the increase in workers in Lapu-Lapu City.

Aside from the export processing zone, Rafols said there are also a lot of companies that are based in the area.

These include call centers, garment factories, and semiconductor companies./Correspondent Michelle L. Padayhag
