Mandaue to search for model brgys

The Mandaue City government will launch a city-wide search for model barangays enforcing the Solid Waste Management Act on its its 42nd Charter Day anniversary on Aug. 30.

The search called “Sulong Mandaue”aims to give these model barangays recognition, reward and support for enforcing the Solid Waste Management Act.

Barangay captain Ernie Manatad, who is also the chairman of the Charter Day celebrations, said the search would encourage barangays to segregate compost and recycle their solid wastes.

Manatad, who is also the Association of Barangay Councils chairman, said it would be a year-long search for model barangays. The winners would be awarded in the next Charter Day.

The 27 barangays will be grouped in five categories according to their barangay internal revenue allotments.

There will be five winners, one for each category.

Manatad said the rewards for the winners would be sourced from the city government’s solid waste management fund, sponsorships, donations or grants.

A team made up of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas-Emission Management Board chairperson, City Council’s environment committee chairperson, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office-Capitol representative, City’s environment and natural resources office representative, city’s Interior and Local Government member and a non-government organization will conduct surprise evaluations twice a year to each of the 27 barangays.

Rowena Alinsonorin, executive director of Integrated Development of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., said the foundation would sit in as the secretariat of the board and they would consolidate the outcome of the evaluations conducted by the team.

Meanwhile, the Mandaue City Charter Day activities will include the Taxpayers night on Aug. 26, Info-formance on Aug. 29, Mass, cultural gala and awarding of outstanding citizens on the Charter Day on Aug. 30.
