MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it dismissed over 100 policemen from the service during the first six months of 2013 in keeping with the PNP’s resolve to weed out misfits from its ranks.
Citing records from the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management, PNP chief, Director General Alan Purisima, said that from January 1 to June 30, 104 police personnel were terminated for their involvement in cases ranging from grave misconduct, serious irregularities, and other criminal activities.
At the same time, 428 other members of the police force were meted disciplinary sanctions for administrative offenses and involvement in irregularities.
Penalties include demotion in rank, suspension, forfeiture of salary, reprimand, restriction to quarters, and withholding of privileges.
Moreover, of the 2,060 administrative and criminal cases that involved police officers, the PNP said only 797—most of which were carried over from previous years—are still waiting resolution in the summary hearing boards.
“All 2,060 cases stemmed from complaints which were all investigated and acted upon at the different levels of command, some of the respondents were meted non-disciplinary sanctions while others were either exonerated or their cases dropped,” he said.
