Today, August 22, is the 30th death anniversary of painter Vicente Manansala. Born on Jan. 22, 1910, Manansala’s works include the Madonna of the Slums, which reflected the poverty of post-war Manila. In 1930, at the age of 19, he graduated from the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts where he was mentored by artists Fernando and Pablo Amorsolo. He was named National Artist in Painting on Aug. 27, 1981, five days after his death.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
