MANILA, Philippines — A security guard shot and killed himself Saturday afternoon at the parking lot he was guarding in Quezon City, police said.

King Philip Rafael, 27, an employee of the Bless Armor Security International Corp, of Mandaluyong City, was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) from a bullet wound in the head.

Police Officer 2 Hermogenes Capili, of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU), said the suicide happened at around 2 p.m. Saturday at the BJT Parking area, at the corner of Banahaw and Zambales Streets, Barangay (village) San Martin de Porres, in Cubao.

Capili said that Rafael’s co-worker Vergel Tumpalaw was taking a nap inside the barracks near the guard house, where the security guard was posted, when he was awakened by gun fire.

According to the case investigator, Tumpalaw searched for the source of the gunfire and stumbled onto the badly wounded Rafael lying bloodied on the ground inside the guard house.

Tumpalaw sought the help of barangay officials who rushed the security guard to the nearest hospital but Rafael died en route to the QMMC.

Capili said that Rafael apparently shot himself in the right temple with the bullet exiting through the left side of his head. He added that the suicide did not leave a note, which could have explained why he killed himself.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) recovered a handgun as well as an empty bullet casing and the fired bullet of a 9mm pistol inside the guard house of the parking lot.
