Run for A Scholar set

THE Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority will be holding a running event dubbed Alphans Run For A Scholar on Aug. 25 at the Ayala Center Cebu’s The Terraces.

The fund-raising activity will be held simultaneously  with other races in Zamboanga, Davao, Manila and Dipolog.

The fun run aims to raise funds for the fraternity’s scholarship project being handled by its alumni association.

The running event was officially launched yesterday at the City Sports Club Cebu headed by National President Abellano Batocael. Joining him was Visayas board of director Antonio Tompar, Ulysses Cagarde, the chairman of the Cebu Alumni Association, and the other members of the fraternity.

“This program is for college students who need help,” said Tompar. “We want to reach out to these students and give them better direction.”

Fifty scholars of the fraternity will benefit the activity.

The running event also serves as a campaign against hazing.

“We in the fraternity do not tolerate hazing. We are here not to hurt but to make each of our brothers and sisters’ lives better,” added Tompar.

The race will be featuring 21-kilometer, 12k, 6k and 3k distances. It will be handled by race director Joel Baring of the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts.

Cash prizes, gift certificates will be awarded to winners in each distance.

Registration fee is P400 for the 21k and P350 for the 12k, 6k and 3k distances.  The first 200 students who can present their identification cards during  registration can avail of the 50 percent discount. The first 50 senior citizens who will join the run may also avail of free registration.

Registration can be done at the RUNNR Ayala Center Cebu, MEZ 1 and 2 and at the Cebu City Sports Center.  /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
