SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur – A Chinese national was thrown in jail here on Friday for hitting one of his sales boy with a ceramic plate, which left a deep cut on the young man’s head, police said.
Michael Chan, who manages a dry goods store here, allegedly became furious when Alvin Candor, 20, tried to justify why he was late for work.
Chan was immediately arrested by policemen and is now locked up at the local jail with six other Chinese nationals awaiting legal proceedings for illegal mining.
Senior Inspector Ephraim Detuya, the town’s police chief, said Chan’s troubles were further complicated when the authorities found out he did not have travel documents.
He said the store manager was a Chinese national and this was evident by his inability to speak any language besides Mandarin.
A local who spoke Mandarin and helped the police in the investigation said Chan explained that that his Davao City-based employer, who is also Chinese, has been holding his passport.
