Danao Team A junior wood pushers emerged champions in the inaugural Cebu Province Inter-Town SK Chess Cup held at the Legislative Building of the Cebu Provincial Capitol.
It was actually a come-from behind victory by the players of Danao Team A as they won most of their matches in the last four rounds yesterday to finish with 21.5 points.
They outplayed Saturday’s leader San Fernando A, which was plagued by losses in the remaining rounds that resulted to an eighth-place finish in the tournament.
Danao team A’s Alphecca and Alphard Gonzales beat Dalaguete’s Gene Aaron Osorio and Brygette Gregremosa in the seventh round yesterday.
Boiet Lao added another win for Danao A after nipping Mark Gerarman but teammate Carl Niño Capul bowed to Dalaguete’s Nick Amestad, preventing a sweep.
San Fernando team A was blanked by Malabuyoc Team A in the final round, which put the latter in second overall with 20 points.
Rounding off the top three teams was San Fernando team B with 17.5 points.
Eighteen towns from southern and northern Cebu competed in the tournament, which is already planned to be a yearly event.
Cash prizes, medals and trophies were given to the winners.
