FEU chalks up sixth straight win

THE FAR Eastern University (FEU) kept their unbeaten streak going after they bested the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 77-67, in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Tams hiked their record to 6-0 (win-loss) as they leaned on the combined 48-point performance of Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia and Mike Tolomia. Romeo scored 19 points, Garcia chipped in 17 while Tolomia added 12.

Garcia added six assists and four rebounds and connived with Tolomia to put the Tigers away in the fourth canto.

UST, which played without skipper Jeric Teng, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury, fell to 3-2

Meanwhile, the reigning champions Ateneo Blue Eagles remained as the kings of Katipunan after they beat their cross-street rivals University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 72-64, in the first game.

Kiefer Ravena showed he is steadily regaining his “Phenom” self as he scored 15 points and had three assists as the Eagles logged just their second win in the tournament. Chris Newsome and Ryan Buenafe had 13 each to help Ateneo.

Buenafe provided the spark as his consecutive three-pointers fueled a 16-4 run that put Ateneo up 43-32. The lead ballooned to 19, 57-38, off a Vince Tolentino basket.

UP fell to its fifth straight loss this season and remained as the lone team without a win. Sam Marata had 22 to lead the Maroons.   /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
