The annual practice of delivering the State of the Nation Address or Sona began during the Commonwealth era. Originally held every June 16 pursuant to Commonwealth Act No. 17, it is now held every fourth Monday of July following the provisions of the 1973 and 1987 Constitutions. The first Sona was delivered by President Manuel L. Quezon at the Legislative Building in Manila on June 16, 1936. A total of 73 Sonas had been delivered as of last year.
