MANILA, Philippines—Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista has suspended classes in public and private schools in Quezon City on July 22, the day of the President’s State of the Nation Address.

The suspension applies to the elementary and high school levels, Bautista said in a press statement issued Thursday.

“The safety and protection of our schoolchildren shall remain as our primordial concern,” the mayor said.

He added that the suspension of classes was also aimed at helping ease vehicular traffic.

The decision to suspend classes at the tertiary level is up to the Commission on Higher Education or the administrations of colleges and the universities.

Meanwhile, the city-run Quezon City Polytechnic University  announced it has decided to also suspended classes on Monday at its Batasan branch campus.

Bautista’s decision to suspend classes was based on a recommendation from the Quezon City Police District and the Division of City Schools.
