THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas Green Lancers are looking mighty invincible this season as they upended the University of San Carlos Warriors, 80-60, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament late Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The nine-time champions appear to be hellbent on returning to the top of the Cesafi league after being dethroned by the University of Cebu last year and the Warriors were the latest to taste their wrath, leading to UV’s third win in as many games while USC fell to an even 2-2 (win-loss) card.

The Warriors led for most of the game until UV broke the game wide open in the latter stages of the third period.

USC hung on to a slim, 51-50, lead when the Lancers unleashed an 11-2 run led by the play of second-year guard John Abad.

Abad completed a three-point play and then added two more jumpers while Harold Cincoflores canned a buzzer-beating three-pointer that put them in front, 61-53, heading to the fourth stanza.

UV took over the remainder of the game with big man Edrian Lao scoring seven in a 10-2 salvo for a 73-58 lead. Abad added a three-pointer and a breakaway layup to complete his stellar performance as he ended up with a game-high 27 points. Even more impressive was the fact that Abad missed just two attempts all-game long. Lao added 21 points while forward Jerome Silva contributed 11.

In spite of an off-shooting night, Giovanni Padillo managed to come away with 18 while Mike Cantonao added 11. The missing link for USC was Sam Hermosa, who finished with a paltry five markers. Correspondent Jonas Panerio
