Floods sweep Danao City brgys, displace 30 families
About 30 families were affected when floodwaters swept through three barangays in Danao City due to heavy rains last Monday evening
One house was also damaged by landslide, the Danao City Social Welfare office said.
Oscar Tabada, acting Mactan chief of the state weather bureau Pagasa, refuted earlier reports that the three barangays were hit by a waterspout or “buhawi.” He said the rains were caused by tropical depression “Isang.”
Supt. Elmer Lim, Danao police chief, said floodwaters reached knee level in sitio Ilaya in barangay Poblacion, barangay Tuburan Sur and parts of barangay Sandayong Sur.
The dowpour started at 5:30 p.m. and lasted nearly an hour.
“We did not receive any report of casualties from the disaster risk management council and from the hospitals or from the community,” Lim said.
The Special Assistance on Fire and Rescue Inc. (Safari) and the Bureau of Fire Protection responded to emergencies in barangays Poblacion and Tuburan Sur, Danao City.
Safari vice president Leo Manulat said the water level reached to waist high in other areas in barangay Poblacion forcing 30 families to leave their homes and head to the city’s Civic Center for safety.
But the evacuees were transferred later to the barangay hall of Poblacion after Manulat coordinated with barangay captain Ramon “Monching” Durano.
The evacuees returned to their respective homes when the water subsided at dawn last Tuesday.
Social worker Ruth Embradora said barangay Sandayong Sur was also affected by flooding and landslide.
She said the landslide also damaged a portion of a concrete house owned by the Donoso family. Embradora said their office is still waiting on the recommendation of the barangays for relief assistance to flood and landslide victims.
Manulat said the heavy rains caused the creek in Tuburan Sur to overflow and flood the neighboring barangays.
Neil Sanchez, Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) chief, said damages in the three barangays were pegged at less than P100,000. No one was hurt.
“The residents said they have not experienced that quick of a flood before. The water level rose very fast,” he said.
