Despite the onset of the rainy season, flood-prone Taguig City has been able to keep down the number of dengue cases in the area.
In a report last week, the city health office said that for the first half of the year, dengue cases dropped by 77 percent.
Only 79 dengue cases were reported from January to June this year, as opposed to the 340 cases recorded during the same period in 2012, the report said.
Of the 79 cases, 35 were reported in January alone. The number of recorded cases, however, decreased over the next months, with only five cases reported in June.
The improved dengue prevention in the city has been recognized by the Department of Health, which earlier cited Taguig’s Barangay (village) Napindan for being dengue-free as well as one of the cleanest communities in Metro Manila.
The barangay reported a 73 percent drop in dengue cases from January to June as compared to the same period in 2012.—Jaymee T. Gamil
