MANILA, Philippines — One man was killed while two others were severely inured after being pressed against more than two tons of glass in a freak accident in Pasig City on Saturday afternoon.
The Pasig Police said Stephen Ballesteros was pronounced dead on arrival at the Pasig City General Hospital while two other workers, identified as Dominador Formento and Benedicto Bernardo, were in critical condition because of their injuries, as of Sunday.
Meanwhile, six other victims — Mariano Gomez, Archival Arao, Carolino Quilain, Michael Gutierrez, Lorito Javier and Balaguer Amadeo Jr.– sustained non-critical injuries during the accident, which happened at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Sonny Realto Compound along Sandoval Avenue, Barangay Pinagbuhatan, Pasig City.
The victims were unloading a 20-foot container van containing 72 pieces of glass sheets which were two meters high, three meters long and half an inch thick per sheet.
While they were unloading the sheets, a rope attached to the crate supporting the glass sheets loosened, which led to the glass sheets slipping and pinning down the workers inside the van.
A total of 2.6 tons of glass piled up on the men, and other workers rushed to unpin them and bring them to the hospital.
