Man killed, 2 injured in Quezon City shooting

MANILA, Philippines — A 27-year-old man was killed while two others, including a teenager, were wounded when one of two motorcycle-riding men let loose a hail of bullets Saturday night at a basketball court in Quezon City.

The suspects fled quickly after gunning down their apparent target Fernando Vergara, of Del Pilar Street, Barangay (village) San Roque in Cubao. He was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) from multiple bullet wounds in the body.

Vergara’s 16-year-old nephew and 21-year-old neighbor Jerwin Domingo were hit by stray bullets and are still undergoing treatment at the QMMC.

Police Officer 2 Julius Cesar Balbuena, of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU), said that the attack happened at around 6 pm at the basketball court along Del Pilar Street, Barangay San Roque in Cubao.

Balbuena said that before the killing, Vergara and Domingo were watching a basketball game being played by the teenager when two men on a single motorcycle arrived.

According to the case investigator, one of the two men suddenly drew a handgun and started shooting at Vergara. The victim was hit several times in the body while one of the bullets struck his nephew, who was standing nearby, in the left leg. Another bullet hit Domingo in the right leg.

The suspects immediately fled after the shooting and the victims were rushed by their relatives to the nearest hospital. Vergara died en route to the medical facility.
