THE FAR EASTERN University (FEU) Tamaraws remained on top of the standings after they outlasted the La Salle Green Archers, 83-79, in overtime in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
It was a gallant win by the Tams, who erased a late 13-point deficit in regulation and captured the win with a torrid 23-6 run.
FEU now stands atop the league with a 4-0 (win-loss) card while La Salle fell to 2-2.
The University of Santo Tomas (UST), meanwhile, bucked the absence of skipper Jeric Teng to beat the University of the East, 88-77, in the first game.
The Tigers showed that there was more to their squad than just Teng, who missed the game because of a shoulder injury he suffered in their last game against National University.
Karim Abdul took advantage of the absence of UE’s import Charles Mammie and had a field day inside with 25 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.
Mammie was suspended for a game for his role in an altercation in their game versus Adamson.
Aljon Mariano also had a double-double of his own with 24 points and 11 rebounds while guard Ed Daquioag chipped in a career-high 19 points, five rebounds and six assists.
UST improved to 3-1 while UE, after being tagged as favorites in the preseason, fell to 1-3.
The Warriors were down in the first half but steadily crawled back behind Roi Sumang, who scored 20 of his 21 points in the final 20 minutes of play. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
