Aquino elevates appeals court jurist to Supreme Court

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino has appointed Court of Appeals Justice Bienvenido Reyes associate justice of the Supreme Court.

Aquino signed Reyes’ appointment to the high tribunal on August 16, documents sent to reporters showed.

Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, Jr.  transmitted the appointment papers to Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona on the same date.

Reyes, who was appointed associate justice to the appellate court on August 8, 2000, replaces retired Justice Antonio Eduardo Nachura.

Reyes is a law graduate from San Beda College. He took the bar examination in 1971, obtaining a rating of 81.6 percent.

From 1975 to 1981, he worked for the R.C. Silverio Group of Companies. A year later, he formed the Reyes Daway Lim Bernardo Lindo and Rosales law firm.

Reyes also served as board secretary of the National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation.

In 1990, he joined the judiciary as a Regional Trial Court judge in  Malabon.

Reyes was born on July 6, 1947 in Obando, Bulacan. He is married to Teresita Jacinta Reyes with whom he has two sons.
