CCSC assembles initial cast for coaching clinic

AN initial cast of 250 sports coordinators, physical education teachers and coaches will undergo training for archery coaching this weekend under the supervision of Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist Dondon Sombrio at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

The training is part of preparations for Cebu City’s attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest archery tournament.

The city hopes to gather 25,000 young archers from the city’s public schools.

Organizers are planning to train a total of 500 coaches who will in turn teach the young archers. The United States of America (USA) is the current Guinness record holder after it attracted 9,000 archers.

Meanwhile, a meeting intended to map out final preparations of the two-weekend training of the volunteers was held late last month. It was attended by DepEd Cebu City officials Dr. Rhea Mar Angtud and Zenaida Gocotano together with Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) chairman Edward Hayco and Sombrio.

“Nindot jud ang training aning atong mga volunteers kay bisan ang atong veteran archers wala nag-agi aning klase nga training,” said Hayco in a talk with Cebu Daily News yesterday.

According to Hayco, DepEd considers the record breaking attempt as part of its strong commitment to develop sports and also a long term goal for both the CCSC and DepEd.

The championships of the school-based tournaments will conclude February next year. The emerging winners estimated to number around 3,000 will compete at the CCSC.

The record attempt, according to Hayco, is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission.
