DOTC seeks UP help to study ‘balanced’ fare adjustment system

MANILA, Philippines – Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya said his agency was eyeing a collaboration with the University of the Philippines’ National Center for Transportation Studies (UP-NCTS) for a “balanced” fare adjustment system.

In an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990AM Wednesday morning, Abaya said that the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) sought to team up with members of the academe to ensure that the fare adjustment would be favorable to drivers, operators and passengers.

The UP-NCTS conducts studies in the field of transportation and offers trainings and seminars on traffic administration and road safety among others.

“Drivers and operators are on opposing ends with their passengers. We want to strike a balance between them. What is important is that we create a systematic way of implementing fare increases and decreases,” he said.

Abaya is optimistic that the UP-NCTS will be able to provide the DOTC with an “academic and impartial point of view” on implementing a fare adjustment system.

“We want to come up with a good formula which we can present and explain to all the stakeholders,” Abaya added.
